Wastewater is water that has been contaminated by industrial, commercial or domestic use. It can carry solids, oils, chemicals, or other pollutants. If not treated properly, it poses a risk to human health and the environment.

Sewage is one type of wastewater that contains waste from homes, while industrial wastewater often contains specific chemicals or byproducts from manufacturing, treating and recycling this water. Each year, millions of cubic metres of wastewater are treated and recycled for irrigation, cooling or safe discharge, helping to conserve water resources in the Gulf region.

A wastewater pump is used for pumping and transferring wastewater, as well as emptying sumps or dosing chemicals to treat contaminated water. The Process includes three main stages of treatment:

Primary Treatment: Removing Solids

Large solids, grit, oils and floatable materials are separated from the water. This usually takes place in settling or sedimentation tanks, where gravity causes heavier particles (sludge) to sink and lighter materials to float for removal. About 50-70% of suspended solids are removed at this stage.

Secondary Treatment: Biological Cleaning

In this step, bacteria and other microorganisms break down organic pollutants that remain after primary treatment. Methods include aeration tanks, activated sludge processes or biological filters. The aim is to reduce dissolved and suspended organic matter, clarifying the water further.

Tertiary Treatment: Advanced Polishing

This final stage removes nutrients, remaining solids, bacteria or chemicals. Depending on plant requirements, techniques may include filtration, chemical dosing, ultrafiltration or disinfection. Tertiary treatment ensures the water meets strict environmental or reuse standards, which is important in the GCC, where treated water is a valuable resource.
